You might need a filling because of tooth decay or if a tooth has been accidentally chipped.

A filling can restore a tooth so that it fits in naturally with your surrounding teeth.

It can also be used to repair the structure of a tooth or teeth damaged by involuntary grinding/clenching habits known as Parafunction.

What does a tooth filling involve?

The need for a filling is usually identified at a routine check-up or you may begin to feel some pain caused by decay in the tooth. If necessary, X-rays will be taken and, once the location of the decay is identified, you will be given a simple local anaesthetic to numb the tooth, gum and surrounding area. This will make sure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.

The decay is removed until the area is clean and the area is shaped to make sure the filling will hold in place.

What materials are used for fillings?

Composite fillings are made of a natural-looking material which is a mix of resin and glass. They are popular because they match the colour of your teeth and are commonly used on front teeth which can be seen when you smile. Composite fillings are durable and can be used for fillings at the front and back of the mouth.

Amalgam fillings, sometimes known as silver fillings, are made of a mixture of different metals. They are known to be durable and long-lasting and are most often used to fill back teeth.
